Michoacán, formally Michoacán de Ocampo,
officially Free and Sovereign State of Michoacán de Ocampois one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District,
comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico.
The State is divided into 113 municipalities
and its capital city is Morelia (formerly called Valladolid).

Knights Templar—Guard of Michoacán (Spanish: Los Caballeros Templarios Guardia Michoacana)
commonly known as the Knights Templar Cartel (Spanish: Los Caballeros Templarios)is a Mexican criminal organization composed of remnants of the defunct La Familia Michoacana
drug cartel based in the Mexican state of Michoacán.
On 21 March 2012,
the Matazetas uploaded a video on the Blog del Narco.The recording, which is slightly over four minutes, shows several men dressed in black,
with ski-masks and heavily armed; some of them (apparently the leaders)
were sitting down at a table—like it has been observed in other videos of the CJNG.In the communiqué, the men said that they will “clean up the states of Guerrero and Michoacán,”
and informed the federal government, the Armed Forces, and the Federal Police
that the CJNG has no problems with them.Then they went on to say that the Jalisco New Generation Cartel was going to start a turf war
“against the Knights Templar Cartel, who were reportedly “abusing of innocent people”
and operating through “kidnappings, extortion, protection racketeering, property theft, and rape.”

On February 2010,
the major cartels aligned in two factions,
one made up of the Juárez Cartel, Tijuana Cartel, Los Zetas and the Beltrán-Leyva Cartel;
the other faction made up of the Gulf Cartel, Sinaloa Cartel and La Familia Michoacana.La Familia Michoacana became a rival of its splinter group Knights Templar.
Operations
La Familia has been known to be unusually violent.
Its members use murder and torture to quash rivals,
while building a social base in the Mexican state of Michoacán.It is the fastest-growing cartel in the country’s drug war
and is a religious cult-like group

In one incident in Uruapan in 2006,
the cartel members tossed five severed heads onto the dance floor of the Sol y Sombra night club
along with a message that read:“The Family doesn’t kill for money. It doesn’t kill women.
It doesn’t kill innocent people, only those who deserve to die.
Know that this is divine justice.“
